A fresh look at blogrolls.

Blogrolls are the social in blogging.
A blogroll says who I follow, and suggests writers you might find interesting.
Blogrolls are where social media comes from.
So now we bring new features from social media back to the world of blogging, via the humble blogroll, of course!
To the right, what we call a social blogroll.
The blogs appear in the order of their last update, ie when something new was posted.
When you click a wedge, links to the five most recent items appear. Click the link to see the post.
A blog moves to the top of the list, automatically, in real time when it updates.
And of course you can use it to follow news orgs, even social media accounts.
And when one of the the blogs in your blogroll updates it moves to the top of the list, and all the expanded stories stay expanded.
In other words it goes far beyond where blogrolls were the last time you looked.
Behind this prototype is an OPML file, a list of interesting blogs hosted by Automattic. It's a good base of content to get started with. When this is ready as a product, anyone will be able to supply their own list, and display it anywhere, just like a blogroll, which is what it is. :-)
